Verify on BlockchainFollowing up on my introduction post about the critical need to modernize music metadata, let’s dive into the first of 10 essential tasks:
Establishing and enforcing a unified global metadata standard.
Why is this foundational?
Because today’s reality is chaos:
a) Existing Practice: We operate with a patchwork. DSPs have style guides, CMOs use regional formats (like CWR) or inconsistently adopted standards, and labels wrestle with legacy data. Enforcement is manual and inconsistent, leading to errors and lost royalties.
b) Potential Reengineering Solution: We could move beyond incremental updates and implement a system where the standard is intrinsic to a shared, immutable infrastructure (like a ledger). AI could automate validation at the point of creation, reducing ambiguity.
c) The NIM/CaaS (“Copyright as Financial Asset”) Model: This approach goes further. The standard isn’t just enforced; it’s embedded within the core data structure of the copyright asset on a ledger from inception. It becomes the non-negotiable “articles of incorporation” for the asset, ensuring consistency from day one.
This task highlights the different paths forward — patching existing systems versus building a new, transparent foundation.
Imagine applying this level of analysis to all 10 critical areas!
I’ll explore the remaining nine tasks and the transformative potential of models like NIM/CaaS in the run-up to the upcoming panel discussion at MiCannes this year.
